Building beyond the standard

A performance-based standard that establishes measurable requirements for energy efficiency in new construction. With Step 3 compliance becoming a mandatory standard by mid-2023, achieve more energy-efficiency and build to a higher level .

the process is simple.

All homes to be net zero energy ready by 2032

The BC Energy Step Code takes a new, performance-based approach rather than the traditional prescriptive approach. It does not specify how to construct a building, but identifies an energy-efficiency target (ie. Reference house) that must be met and lets the designer/builder decide how to meet it.

Each “Step” has an incremental requirement for the performance to be more efficient and is represented by efficiency gains as percentage better than a “Reference house”. With the wide adoption of Step 3 by mid- 2023, all homes must be designed and constructed to be 20% more efficient than the reference house.

We are devoted to educating builders in new techniques for easy Step Code adaption

Claim rebates and incentives

There are both provincial and municipal rebates available for homes built to more energy efficient standards. Every municipality has different incentive program depending on local policy, energy sources and the “step” they have adopted.

BetterHomesBC is the BC Government run website that maintains the most up-to-date list of incentives.
